The Paul Revere House

Paul Revere was made famous by the eponymous poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: “Listen my children and you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere…”

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxA-oMtiaM63JBJPU5moMtlV3maWpFEtNxzmfVTV5OJ3zdOuYvWrAZMdKbHPHcvYwUz37YLXSlqZ3uXJrzUBv2OPAOXY1XR4BvB_PoWA8iRKu9hkn8fV2bdxwsXyllN2-BF5awbbJgKJc/s400/Paul+Revere+House.jpg

You probably already know that Paul Revere could ride a horse. His Midnight Ride from Boston through Lexington and Concord, to alert colonists to oncoming British troops, has become an emblem of early American patriotism. You probably didn’t know that he was a silversmith, making all things metal from belt buckles to 900 lb bells for the townspeople of Boston in the late 1700s. As was common for silversmiths of that era, Revere also worked as a dentist.

Revere made engravings, too, an unusual skill for a silversmith, as such work was usually reserved for expert engravers. But his engraving of the Boston Massacre detailed exactly where citizens were shot in the square, and was intended to be used as a court document against the British soldiers.

http://www.bostonbyfoot.org/imagelib/photos/cristina/viewable/c-inline/cristinaBBFV0002-1c.jpg

Incidentally, his house is the oldest remaining building in downtown Boston - quite the historical coincidence. In the late 1800s, a century after his ride and the birth of the nation, his house was going to be demolished. To save it, Revere’s great-grandson helped found the Paul Revere Memorial Association and opened the house to the public in 1908 (making it one of the earliest historic house museums in the United States).

The house is representative of colonial architecture with no interior hallways and today features period furnishings and a Colonial-era garden. One of Revere’s bells sits in the courtyard. (source)

Reinventing the Nail Clipper

Often times, the simplest objects that we frequently use in our day to day lives are left behind by modernization. Take for example the standard nail cutters or nail clippers. Their design has hardly changed ever since their inception.

http://www.theresidentarchitect.com/image-files/klhip%2001.jpg

"Why redesign so mundane?" - This is the question that the creators of Klhip answered when they reinvented the nail clipper. Though the average nail clippers have done a fairly good job in clipping nails, it has come to a point wherein its design and its look no longer fit the modern times.

So what's so great about this nail clipper by Klhip? It defines the word efficiency, which is already becoming a common word nowadays and comparing this reinvented nail clipper with your average nail clipper, you'll definitely agree with me that it definitely is efficient in a lot of ways.

http://www.theresidentarchitect.com/image-files/klhip%2003.jpg

They use a single blade that cuts your nails neatly which will not need any filing after wards. And because of its unique blade design, the nails don't just fly across the room, it stays on board and gathering the clippings is just a breeze.

The cutting action has also been redesigned to be more ergonomic. Pressure is applied directly on top of the nail which makes cutting easier. Using a matte stainless steel finish for its overall body will make this nail clipper definitely last for a very long time.

Klhip has claimed to be the ultimate nail clipper and it definitely is because of its efficiency and sleek design. (Source)

Lizards Prove Virgin Birth is Possible

You might be surprised to learn that virgin births are found in nature, not just religious tradition and mythology. That said, virgin birth is something not normally seen in vertebrates (animals with backbones). Some insects and other invertebrates commonly reproduce by the cloning process called parthenogenesis. Vertebrates, on the other hand, reproduce sexually, with a male contributing genetic material to the female during the mating process, which combines to form offspring. At least usually.

Lizard All Female A newly described lizard species from Vietnam demonstrates that it's possible for vertebrate animals to reproduce asexually, with females giving birth to offspring without mating with a male.

Named Leiolepis ngovantrii, it is a kind of butterfly lizard. The first odd thing about it is the story of its recent discovery by scientists. It is fairly common in the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province in Vietnam and is well-known to the locals, who have made it a regular part of their diet and commonly serve it in rural restaurants. In fact, a restaurant is where the lizard first piqued the interest of a scientist who saw it on the menu.

He took photos of several of the lizards that were in a holding tank at the diner and sent them to his colleagues at La Sierra University in California, who quickly made plans to travel to Vietnam to investigate. Unfortunately, by the time they were able to reach that particular restaurant to get specimens of the lizard for study, the owner had cooked and served them all. Luckily, with the help of local kids and other restaurants, they were able to collect several dozen species on their own.

Upon investigation, the scientists made a bizarre discovery: all of these lizards are female. Even odder, they suspect that the lizards are actually hybrids of two other species and, rather than being sterile like most hybrids, evolved the ability to develop offspring without requiring fertilzation from males. Illusions that make rooms bigger

The American artist Nils Nova has made some impressive art work that locates between optical illusion and curious perception of space. The explanation lies in printing photographs in large format. He is simply taping the printed photos on walls in a room to give the perfect optical illusion. The rooms appear to be much bigger than they are because the photos are showing extra space in such a convincing way. It looks so realistic that you would be fooled to believe that the house or apartment is a lot bigger than it really is.

Something similar has been done by another artist that has made “invisible packages, billboard and street signs” that are also printed photos wrapped around the mentioned to give the illusion of invisibility. (Source)

How to Improve Your Memory

Memory involves three stages: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Your brain encodes information when it perceives it and registers it. This information can then be stored for future retrieval. Memory failure occurs when any one of these three stages breaks down.

http://www.rd.ca/cms/images/image/memgame_291_20080131-160759.jpg

Memory itself has been divided into various kinds, including sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Sensory memory receives information from stimuli through the senses, such as smell, sight, and touch. Short-term memory, also called working memory, holds small amounts of information for brief periods.

Thus, we can add up numbers in our head, remember a telephone number long enough to dial it, and remember the first half of a sentence while reading or listening to the second half. But as we all know, short-term memory has its limits.

If you want to store information indefinitely, it must go into your long-term memory. How can you put it there? The following principles will help.

▪ Interest Cultivate an interest in the subject, and remind yourself of the reasons for learning it. As your own experience in life may tell you, when your emotions are involved, you enhance your memory.

▪ Attention “Most ‘memory failures’ actually represent failures in attention,” says the book Mysteries of the Mind. What can help you to pay attention? Be interested and, where possible, take notes. Note-taking not only focuses the mind but also enables a listener to review the material later.

▪ Understanding When you do not understand a teaching or concept, likely you will not remember it well, if at all. Understanding illuminates the relationship between the parts, knitting them together to form a logical whole. For example, when a student of mechanics understands how an engine works, he will better remember details about the engine.

▪ Organization Categorize similar concepts or related ideas. For instance, a grocery list is easier to remember when we categorize items—meats, vegetables, fruits, and so on. Also, divide the information into manageable chunks of not more than five to seven items. Telephone numbers are usually divided into two parts so that they can be remembered more easily. Finally, it may help to put your list into a certain order, perhaps alphabetical.

▪ Recitation, or verbalization Repeating aloud what you want to remember (a foreign-language word or phrase, for example) will strengthen the neural connections. How so? First, saying the word forces you to pay close attention. Second, you may get immediate feedback from your teacher. And third, listening—even to yourself—calls into play other parts of your brain.

▪ Visualization Make a mental picture of what you wish to remember. You might also find it helpful to draw it or map it out. Like verbalization, visualization makes use of different parts of your brain. The more senses you use, the deeper the information is embedded.

▪ Association When learning something new, associate it with something you already know. Linking thoughts to memories already stored makes encoding and retrieving easier, the association serving as a cue. For example, to remember a person’s name, link it to some unusual feature of his appearance or to something else that will call the name to mind. The more humorous or absurd the association, the better the recall. In short, we need to think about the people and things we want to remember.

The book Searching for Memory states: “If we operate on automatic pilot much of the time and do not reflect on our environment and our experiences, we may pay a price by retaining only sketchy memories of where we have been and what we have done.”

▪ Consolidation Allow time for the information to be processed, to soak in, as it were. One of the best ways to do this is to review what you have learned, perhaps by repeating it to someone else. If you had an interesting experience or read something upbuilding in the Bible or in a Bible study aid, share it with someone. In that way both of you will benefit—your memory will be reinforced and your friend, encouraged. For good reason, repetition has been called the mother of retention.

Pororoca , Brazilian longest wave on the Earth

The pororoca is a tidal bore, with waves up to 4 meters high that travel as much as 13 kilometers inland upstream on the Amazon River. Its name comes from the indigenous Tupi language, where it translates into "great destructive noise". It occurs at the mouth of the river where river water meets the Atlantic Ocean. The phenomenon is best seen in February and March.

The wave has become popular with surfers. Since 1999, an annual championship has been held in São Domingos do Capim. However, surfing the Pororoca is especially dangerous, as the water contains a significant amount of debris from the shores of the river (often entire trees). In 2003 the Brazilian Picuruta Salazar won the event with a record ride of 12.5 kilometers during 37 minutes.

Tehachapi Wind Farm

The numerous turbines crowding the hills of the Tehachapi-Mojave area make it one of the world’s greatest creators of wind powered electricity. Operated by private companies, the Tehachapi Wind Farm produces 800 million kilowatt hours of electricity, enough to power the residential needs of 350,000 people every year.

http://static.atlasobscura.com/images/place/tehachapi-wind-farm.10105.large_slideshow.jpg

The Tehachapi region of California is considered to be the birthplace of wind power in North America. The open spaces, along with winds averaging 14 to 20 miles per hour, made it ideal for a renewable and clean energy center. While the first turbines installed in the 1980s stood at between 45 and 60 feet high, they now stretch up to between 400 and 500 feet high and can produce from 1 to 2.4 megawatts of power.

There are over 15,000 turbines in California, generating 1% of the state’s energy.

Killer Whales Are Actually Dolphins

“Killer Whales”, or Orcas, are actually dolphins. In fact, they are the largest member of the dolphin family, Delphinidae.

http://www.pwsdots.org/uploads/orca.jpg

Now strictly speaking, whales are marine animals of the order of Cetacea and occasionally Cetacea is used to refer to not just whales, but also porpoises and dolphins. However, it generally excludes these latter mariner animals, which belong to the sub-order Odontoceti.

So depending on who you talk to dolphins, including the Orca, may be considered whales and dolphins or may be considered a separate marine animal from other whales. But in either case, Orcas are one of the 35 species in the oceanic dolphin family, with its closest relative being the Irrawaddy dolphin.

Smallest Playable Drumset

At the Kansas City Mini Maker Faire, Taylor Jessee introduced me to his one of his latest creations, the Mini Drumset. Dissatisfied with plastic miniatures that look authentic but lack the full sound of real drums, he decided to design his own. He spent lots of time perfecting the snare sound with multiple layers of wrap, wire, and sugar, and finding the appropriate materials to produce a good symbol crash- in this case, a sawed-off candlestick holder.

Worlds Fastest Electric Car Hits 307mph

A team from Ohio State University may have just set a new record for the fastest electric car on the planet. The Buckeye Bullet was clocked on Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats at speeds averaging 307 mph. And it might have gone faster on a later run if they hadn’t had a technical hitch, they say on their blog.

“Our last attempt yesterday was all set to be the best run yet, everything was looking great, but midway through the first mile, we busted our clutch. Too much torque from our motor ripped apart the half inch steel teeth that keep the motor connected to the gearbox. After a late night of trying to disassemble the motor and reinstall another type of clutch, we decided to call it: our last record will stay the best.”

The Football Carpet

At 31 inches by 62 inches, the Football carpet isn’t fit for staging any actual matches, but think of all the happy feelings you’ll get when walking through the door, if you’re a Soccer fan, that is. Designer Karin Mannerstål has created an approximation of a footie field with 100 percent, hand-tufted wool.

Admittedly, we’re not familiar with the benefits of hand-tufting, but hopefully stepping on this carpet feels something like running around on fresh grass, fielding a header into the net and filling out your sails with the delighted screams of fans. It’s available in one color — green, of course — and sells for $190.43. Angry hooligans on the sidelines not included

10 Bizarre Facts about your Toothpaste

Even after giving careful consideration before buying your favourite toothpaste, you often end up purchasing a product that ultimately forces you to look for another failing you to achieve satisfactorily whiter teeth. It’s a very common story in almost all houses of the globe.

http://www.virginmedia.com/images/04toothpaste400x300.jpg

Majority of us find it very difficult choosing an ideal paste that can give us cavity-free fresh whiter teeth. Such inability of ours is linked to three major issues: misleading advertisements, shear lack of general awareness about functioning of toothpastes, and availability of unlimited number of brands each claiming superior to others.

Reaching to near-ideal toothpaste is not only essential for ensuring improved oral hygiene, it also requires for protecting your teeth from early decay. In order to help you out finding useful toothpaste and keeping up oral hygiene, here I have listed 10 bizarre facts about toothpastes, knowledge of which will empower you protecting your teeth wisely.

1. Fluoride that matters
Quantity and quality of fluoride that all matter in making a toothpaste highly effective. Whatever improvised ingredients might the manufacturers say offering in their toothpastes, you need to check the existence of fluoride. You are free to check whether your paste contains ingredients for breath freshening, tartar control, and teeth whitening, but Academy of General Dentistry says one must brush her/his teeth twice daily using fluoride toothpaste in order to help stop tooth decay by at least 40 percent. “Even in areas where there is water fluoridation, the added fluoride in toothpaste has been shown to be very beneficial,” adds Caryn Loftis-Solie, RDH, president of the American Dental Hygiene Association (ADHA).

2. Whitening toothpastes work better
Up to certain extent, whitening toothpastes work better. However, they can’t be compared with the professional whitening treatments to brighten your smile, as these products do not contain bleach in general. “Whitening toothpastes—like all toothpastes—contain mild abrasives to help remove surface stains on your teeth,” says Dr. Clifford Whall, PhD, director of the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance Program. “The shape of the particles used in whitening products, though, is modified to clean those stains away better, so you’ll see a noticeable difference in how your teeth look.”

3. Brushing technique is more important than the toothpaste brand
How you brush your teeth that really matter than what you use. Even if you have best quality paste and brush at your disposal, you can’t achieve noticeable improvement at your dental front, until you follow permitted ways of brushing. “To do it properly, you need to position the brush at a 45 degree angle so that you get some of the bristles in between the tooth and the gums,” says Dr. Whall. “Move the brush in small circles in those areas, and then continue on to the rest of the teeth. This process should take about one to two minutes to complete.”

4. American Dental Association gives approval after suitably examining effectiveness
Check if your about-to-buy product contains requisite seal of approval from the ADA. Cheap local products generally do not receive such approval owing to non-compliance of safety-standard norms. These non-approved products may jeopardise your dental health. “You should always look for the ADA Seal when choosing a toothpaste,” adds Dr. Whall. “Only those products have the scientific data to back up their claims and have been proven to meet our criteria for safety and effectiveness.”

5. All toothpastes contain common thickening, foaming, and adhesive elements
You will be surprised to know that all toothpastes contain very common thickening, foaming, and adhesive elements in spite of claiming to be entirely different from each other. Ingredients like detergent and seaweed are very common in all most all categories of fluoride toothpastes. Seaweed colloids, mineral colloids together with natural gums constitute common thickening agents of the toothpastes, advocates ADA. Sodium lauryl sulfate is in widespread use in toothpastes to create foaming action. ADA certifies these elements as absolutely safe and effective.

6. Pea-size amount of toothpaste is ideal
Opposing to what you believe, you actually require a very small amount of paste to clean your teeth effectively. A brush full of toothpaste merely helps you making your teeth pearl white. E. Jane Crocker, RHD, president of the Massachusetts Dental Hygienists’ Association, says, “All you need is a pea-size amount of toothpaste—yes, I mean the little green vegetable!” It has been proved that a small amount of paste can only work effectively in removing one’s plaque and food debris.

7. Pastes and gels both work alike
You need not to bother about pastes or gels. They both work alike. Only thing, you can choose them as per your personal choice. There’s really no tricks work behind formulating paste or gel toothpastes. “Other than flavor, texture and how it makes a person feel, there aren’t any major differences among the various forms,” contends Crocker. “I think it comes down to personal preference, which might come through trial and error. I encourage my patients to use whichever product encourages them to brush.”

8. Organic toothpastes function even better
Most people consider organic toothpastes as inferior to the regular ones. The conception is not correct. Experts say, organic toothpastes with fluoride even work better. “Natural and organic toothpastes that include fluoride in their ingredients are as effective as regular toothpastes with fluoride,” says Crocker. These products also help you avoid artificial preservatives, dyes, and sweeteners.

9. Change brands of toothpaste and brush regularly
Staying within the purview of the above stated facts, you are advised not to continue with the same brands of toothpaste together with toothbrush for a prolonged period of time. Rotating paste and brush at regular interval helps avoiding perilous effects of any particular brand. It also gives you opportunity to get exposed to any improved model that come to market from time to time.

10. Use special toothpastes suiting special needs
Special needs such as brushing kids’, smokers’, and dentures teeth require special kind of toothpastes. Children often fail to spit out fluoride pastes while washing; they, hence, should be encouraged to use non-fluoride pastes. Fluoride pastes if not washed adequately may develop permanent stains. Smokers require toothpaste that can remove the stains of nicotine. Similarly, you may require special kind of toothpastes to suit your varied requirements.

The above tips are not complete as far as teeth protection is concerned. To check what paste suits you better accommodating your geographic location and personnel, you may consider consulting your dentist to guide you keeping your teeth odour free white.

Red-eyed tree frogs, Small but splendid

Red-eyed tree frogs, as their name states, have bold red eyes with vertically narrowed noses, a vibrant green body with yellow and blue striped sides, and orange toes. There is a great deal of regional variation in flank and thigh coloration Although it has been suggested that bright colors function as sexual signals, this has not been confirmed.

Males range from 2 to 2½ inches while females can get to 3 inches on average. Young frogs are typically brown in color and turn greener as they mature, although adult frogs can change their color slightly depending on mood and environment. Red-eyed tree frogs have soft, fragile skin on their belly, and the skin on their back is thicker and rougher.

http://images.fanpop.com/images/image_uploads/Red-eyed-tree-frog-sea-life-229600_700_525.jpg

The long limbs on these frogs are better suited for climbing than swimming. Another feature is the sucker pads on the end of each digit. These pads allow the frogs to stick to various objects and provides better traction on wet leaves and branches. Most of the frogs that are in the Hylidade family have a third eye lid called a nictitating membrane. The purpose of this membrane is to shield the frog’s sensitive eyes from various dangers. The lid is often brightly colored and does not completely restrict vision.

http://www.terrapodcast.com/media/samples/graphics/red%20eyed%20tree%20frog.jpg

Phyllomedusid tree frogs are arboreal animals, meaning they spend a majority of their life in trees, which also makes them great jumpers. Red-eyed tree frogs are not poisonous and rely on camouflage for protection. During the day, they remain motionless, cover their blue sides with their back legs, tuck their bright feet under their belly, and shut their red eyes. Thus, they appear almost completely green, and well hidden among the foliage.

Red-eyed tree frogs are carnivorous and eat crickets, moths, flies, and other insects, and have been known to eat other small frogs. For froglets, fruit flies and pinhead crickets are the meals of choice. These beautiful beasts are in danger of being wiped out if too much forest is removed, so conservationists are working hard to prevent that. Nature really can come up with truly beautiful examples of wildlife, and they deserve to be preserved for future generations.

Dare 9 years old Somali pirates

What does one expect a typical child of 9 years to do with his life? Mostly, your expectations would involve play, learn, study, interact with his peers, develop, etc. The sad truth of the matter is that many in many parts of the world kids simply don’t have this opportunity.

And, the casue is not poverty, it is far worse than that. Somali kids, starting from the age of 9 are trained to be fighting soldiers. Instead of learning the techniques of soccer and baseball, they are trained in operating and cleaning automatic rifles.

Look at the heart chilling photographs of 12 and 15 year boys with loaded Kalashnikov rifles in their hands. What happened to their childhood? We have always heard that we should learn to see the world through a child’s eyes, but what the eyes of these children see, one hopes never too see.

Futuristic Atomium at Brussels Belgium

Atomium is a stunning monument designed by the engineer Andre Waterkeyn for the International Exhibition of Brussels, that took place here in 1958. The Atomium, which is a structure that is half way between sculpture and architecture, symbolising a crystallised molecule of iron by the scale of its atoms, magnified 150 thousand million times.

Tubes which connect the spheres along the 12 edges of the cube and all eight vertices to the centre enclose escalators connecting the spheres which contain exhibit halls and other public spaces. The top sphere provides a panoramic view of Brussels.

Each sphere is 18 metres in diameter. Three spheres are currently (2008) closed to visitors, others are easily reachable with escalator. The vertical vertex contains a lift which was considered very fast and advanced at the time of building.

Unicorn, Mysteriously Beautiful Horse

A unicorn (from Latin unus 'one' and cornu 'horn') is a mythological creature. Though the modern popular image of the unicorn is sometimes that of a horse differing only in the horn on its forehead, the traditional unicorn also has a billy-goat beard, a lion's tail, and cloven hooves-these distinguish it from a horse.

Marianna Mayer has observed (The Unicorn and the Lake), "The unicorn is the only fabulous beast that does not seem to have been conceived out of human fears. In even the earliest references he is fierce yet good, selfless yet solitary, but always mysteriously beautiful. He could be captured only by unfair means, and his single horn was said to neutralize poison.

Scientists Create Dry Water

The substance resembles powdered sugar and could revolutionize the way chemicals are used. Each particle of dry water contains a water droplet surrounded by a sandy silica coating. In fact, 95 per cent of dry water is ”wet” water.

Scientists believe dry water could be used to combat global warming by soaking up and trapping the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Tests show that it is more than three times better at absorbing carbon dioxide than ordinary water.

Dry water may also prove useful for storing methane and expanding the energy source potential of the natural gas. Dr Ben Carter, from the University of Liverpool, presented his research on dry water at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston.

He said: ”There’s nothing else quite like it. Hopefully, we may see dry water making waves in the future.”

Another application demonstrated by Dr Carter’s team was using dry water as a catalyst to speed up reactions between hydrogen and maleic acid. This produces succinic acid, a key raw material widely used to make drugs, food ingredients, and consumer products.

Usually hydrogen and maleic acid have to be stirred together to make succinic acid. But this is not necessary when using dry water particles containing maleic acid, making the process greener and more energy efficient.

”If you can remove the need to stir your reactions, then potentially you’re making considerable energy savings,” said Dr Carter.

The technology could be adapted to create ”dry” powder emulsions, mixtures of two or more unblendable liquids such as oil and water, the researchers believe. Dry emulsions could make it safer and easier to store and transport potentially harmful liquids.

10 Article Writing Keys For Newbies

This article on the 10 (no, 11... yes, 11) tips for newbies is not written from the catbird seat point of view of the article host or database manager. Rather it is by and from the perspective of an author who remembers the early misgivings.

It is written especially for the beginning article writer. The Tennessee Mountain Man has written and submitted hundreds of articles for publication to thousands of article hosts anddatabase managers and still finds article writing his nemesis.

1. Necessity vs Desire
Articles and Blogs are necessary in today's scheme of search engine indexing. Not what the newbie wants to hear. Just remember what the Bible says, "there has nothing over taken you that is not common to man". That's right! All of us hate article and Blog writing at times, and some of us dread the journey to pen and paper (or keyboard as the case may be) all the time. Many a webmaster would call them "a necessary evil" as they are not generally anyone's best liked house keeping chores.

2. Just Start, It Gets Easier
First it is sometimes difficult to get a subject or theme and to get the first couple of lines scribbled down. The Tennessee Mountain Man knows authors who literally get sick thinking about the process. Lighten up. Once an author has a starting point and gets passed the initial thoughts, article and Blog writing usually goes fairly smoothly.

The main thing is that you get started. Pick a subject you know something about and just start. You will be pleasantly surprised at just how easily ideasflow. Don't assume everyone knows what you know. They don't. Will Rogers once said, "all men are ignorant, just on different subjects". And, so it is!

3. Good vs Perfection
Your old English comp professor is not looking over your shoulder. This paper does not have to be perfect. That is not to say it does not have to be on point or to say that it does not have to be correct. It does or at least it should be. But, perfection is not the goal and is, in fact, seldom possible. Too much detail and you run the risk of losing your reader on several levels. Too long and
most readers simply don't have the time or interest to wade through the material regardless of how important it is.

4. Blog Length vs Article Length
Most publishers want a minimum of six hundred (600) words per article - some will let you slide with four hundred (400) words. Blogs can be much smaller. Blogs can and maybe should support appropriate pictures and embedded links.

Just don't over do it. Too gaudy or too slow to load and you have wasted your time, ticked off a potential reader, and probably upset a host who can ban you from their publications. Articles, on the other hand, typically cannot carry these extra touches according to the requirements of most publishers.

5. Format
Prepare your article in American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) format. There are many tools from which to choose to get the job done. A search for 'free ASCII editor' or for 'free plain text editors' will provide one with a multitude of free options. Word Press is a popular choice. If all else fails simply use notepad to turn out your masterpiece.

6. Spelling and Grammar
Once you have your article or Blog run it through a good spell checker and a good grammar checker. Microsoft Word works well for these purposes. Just don't use the MS Word copy for publication of your article. Rather use it's suggestions to make any necessary corrections to your plain text copy. The MS Word copy will work for Blogs although the Computerman prefers other editors.

Just like the days when you were pushed by Profs, you will find Article and Blog writing skills become easier with time and practice.

7. Publish and Announce
Once your Blog is ready you may want to use some automatic tools to publish and announce it. First do a search for Blog hosts and select those which best suit your needs. Join one or more and publish your Blog there. Then search for Blog announcers and rss announcers and use them to get your Blog noticed.

Now that you have that out of the way find an article wizard that will post your Articles to free publishers. You can post them one at a time by hand if you are really bored and have absolutely nothing else in life to do. Using an automatic poster you can publish to hundreds of hosts in an hour or so. The only way to go.

8. Patience
Now, have some patience. Here is where you lose control. Many of the men and women who host articles are timely and your articles will be reviewed within twenty-four (24) to forty-eight (48) hours. But, many others will be days and weeks down the road therefore never date an article - a sure way to get rejected.

9. Rejection - "sorry your article has been declined"
Be prepared for most hosts to reject your articles. Do not take it personally. It usually has little to do with you or your article.

Some databases routinely reject articles for spelling errors when there are none or where there is more than way to spell a word. And, just as in any other endeavor some hosts are simply too lazy and get so far behind, the easiest and fastest thing to do (and perhaps the only alternative) is to reject everything. You will learn who these are over time.

Then there are those who run your articles through the sausage grinder and if they find certain words, irrespective of how they are used, your article gets no farther. These are the people who can't publish the Holy Bible because it contains words that offend them or their readers. Don't worry about these folks who are so heavenly minded they are of no earthly use.

Remember, just as in everything else in life, for every rule there is an exception

10. Keep the faith, and keep cranking out articles
Since most authors, especially newbies, prepare only one copy of an article against the advice of most seasoned authors it is important that the newbie keep his chin up - keep the faith. That will be easier as more and more of your articles are accepted and published driving visitors to your website while creating those all important back links.

It is not necessary that every host to accept everything submitted to them. After one or two hosts publish your article on any given subject, the search engines tend to penalize you anyway by ignoring additional postings. This is close to spamming and while it could help someone find you, it probably won't. It is not necessarily, the more the merrier. The additional listings will not increase your page rankings or links reported by the searchengines. It is more important to get published by hosts with the highest Google page rank possible.

Now, one BONUS TIP for you: Along with "the rejection slip" will usually come a suggestion on how to "fix" your article and a request that you resubmit it. Don't waste your time. While trying comply with onedatabase manager's request you could have written a new article from which you get much more punch. Enough publishers will pick your article up so move on and save yourself some time and heartburn.

Everybody has a thought or idea at least once a day usually at the most inopportune time. How many good ideas have you lost because of waiting? Don't procrastinate! Go! Capture that thought before it is gone forever.
