“American photographer Spencer Tunick, the unrivaled documentarian of staged public nudity, has had hordes of people undress for him around the world in order to capture what appear to be vast seas of flesh undulating across open spaces.
His newest image, unveiled yesterday, is a record of an event, which he calls “The Base,” staged during Sydney’s Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras festivities in March. It portrays a throng of over 5,000 naked bodies carpeting the space outside the Sydney Opera House.
Those participants who were willing to strip at 4 a.m. on a chilly March morning in the forecourt of the Jørn Utzon-designed structure were rewarded with a limited edition print of the image. (Many of them even made it to work on time.) But some who showed up were wary of the full-frontal exposure they were about to experience around members whose sexual orientation differed from their own.
“It was difficult to get the straight participants to embrace the gay participants and vice versa,” Tunick told the Telegraph. “So I was very happy that that last set up finally got done and everyone came together (in a) united, friendly kiss, a loving kiss in front of this great structure.”
